ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY

Software engineer resume guide

Describe what you built, the tools you used, and your contribution. Keep technologies grounded in actual work; do not upgrade your title or invent traffic, latency, or revenue figures to make a bullet sound senior.

Explain your contribution, not just the technology stack

A list of languages gives a reader little information about what you built. Connect a technology to a specific contribution: the endpoint you implemented, the interface you maintained, the test you added, or the migration you supported. Name the system at a level you can discuss without exposing confidential details.

Separate ownership from participation. Implementing a feature within an existing service is valuable work; it does not need to become “architected the platform.” If several engineers contributed, describe your part. When you have a measured result, retain the baseline, measurement method, and relevant scope in your working notes so you can explain the number.

For an early-career resume, a personal or academic project can show applied skills. Label it as a project rather than employment. Describe what works, what you implemented yourself, and how you tested it. A deployed demo is useful context only when it exists and you are comfortable sharing it.

Source facts

Fictional notes: added a Python endpoint that validates order input and writes it to PostgreSQL; added integration tests for invalid input.

A complete bullet

Implemented a Python order endpoint with input validation and PostgreSQL storage; added integration tests for invalid requests.

The reader can identify the feature, technology, and verification work. Nothing here implies a performance improvement or a larger ownership scope.

Source facts

Fictional notes: contributed two React screens to a team scheduling app and fixed keyboard navigation in its date picker.

A complete bullet

Built two React screens for a team scheduling app and corrected keyboard navigation in the date picker.

This names a concrete interface contribution. It does not turn a single keyboard fix into a claim that the entire application meets an accessibility standard.

A checklist for this role

  • Connect each major technology to work or a clearly labeled project.
  • Distinguish implemented, maintained, reviewed, and designed.
  • Include performance numbers only when you know how they were measured.
  • Check links to repositories or demos and remove confidential code, internal addresses, and credentials.

A clearer bullet. The same facts.

A rewrite should make your contribution easier to understand. Here is a fictional example that changes the expression without adding a new employer, qualification, or result.

Original wording

Worked on backend APIs in Python and fixed bugs reported by support.

Rewritten wording

Developed Python backend APIs and resolved bugs reported by the support team.

The revision gives the action a direct verb and keeps the scope from the original. It does not add a percentage or promotion. If you have a verified result, include it with enough context to explain how it was measured.

Gather the details that make this yours

Service purpose, programming language, ownership, testing, and measured results if available.

Look at your own project notes, job history, and performance records. For each recent role, write down what you did, how you did it, and what happened. If a number is uncertain, leave it out or clearly describe its basis rather than guessing.

Use job keywords with evidence

These terms may be relevant to software engineer roles. Compare them with the actual job posting, then use only the terms that describe your experience.

  • Python
  • backend APIs
  • testing
  • debugging

A required skill in a job advertisement is not proof that you have that skill. Put tools in the context of work you performed and explain transferable experience when you are changing roles.

Check the final document

  1. Confirm your name, contact information, employers, dates, and credentials against the original.
  2. Use clear section headings and a simple reading order. Follow the employer's requested file type.
  3. Copy text from the exported PDF into a plain text editor to check that it is readable and in order.
  4. Read every bullet aloud. Keep language you would comfortably explain in an interview.
