THE APPLICATION CHECKLIST

Make your resume easier to read. For people and software.

An ATS-friendly resume makes your experience easy to extract and understand. It cannot guarantee an interview or substitute for the qualifications a role requires.

1. Follow the application's instructions

Use the file format requested by the employer. If the application asks for Word, submit a DOCX file. If it accepts PDF, export a text-based PDF and check that you can select and copy the words. Renaming an image or text file to end in .pdf does not create a readable PDF.

Give the file a recognizable name, such as Alex-Morgan-Resume.pdf. Open the exact file you intend to upload and check it after any final edits.

2. Keep the reading order simple

Start with your name and contact details in the document body. Use familiar headings such as Experience, Education, and Skills. A single-column layout gives you a straightforward order to inspect. Do not make an icon or chart the only place a skill, phone number, or qualification appears.

Copy the exported resume into a plain text editor. Check that roles, employers, dates, and bullets appear in the intended sequence. This is a useful extraction check, not a simulation of every employer's software.

3. Match language to your actual experience

Read the job description and identify the work, tools, and qualifications the employer asks for. Where the terminology matches experience you genuinely have, use it naturally in your skills and experience sections. Spell out an unfamiliar abbreviation on first use when space allows.

Do not hide keywords in white text, repeat a job description, or list every tool in an advertisement. A requirement is context about the job, not evidence about you.

4. Write specific, defensible bullets

Start with the action, then explain the work and its scope. Add a result when you have one you can support. “Coordinated weekly inventory checks across three locations” is useful without an invented savings figure.

The revision changes the wording without claiming faster response times, a promotion, or a satisfaction score. Use our role-specific guides to identify details worth collecting for your own bullets.

5. Treat a score as feedback

There is no single RewriteMe score that represents every employer's screening process. Our free score is an AI estimate of resume quality that highlights potential issues with clarity, structure, and detail. Different tools use different methods, and a high score does not guarantee that an employer will shortlist you.

Use the specific feedback to improve the document, then read the whole resume yourself. Check the contact information, dates, job titles, and claims against your source material.
